WILDLIFE | Elephant Blues
THE BLUES
This sub-adult elephant was clearly upset - he separated himself from the herd and moved towards a small pan where he threw himself to the ground, proceeding with the strangest sounds and behaviour. We initially thought he might be injured or in pain judging by the way he was carrying on with the odd and awkward movements, but after a few more "tantrums" he got up and walked to a tree for a quick snack and eventually joined up with the rest of the herd again.
When an elephant bull reaches a certain age, he will gradually become more independent of his family and eventually breaks away completely. My guess is that he was entering this stage that would slowly result in him breaking away over the next while.
